YOUR ISLAND
Welcome to a beautiful
drop in the ocean.
Picnic Island is personalised by design and made unique by nature. Surrounded by pristine ocean, the island offers views of the ancient landscape in every direction.
Under new ownership, it has been thoughtfully reimagined as a luxurious private retreat.
All this beauty, all this luxury, all this privacy, is all yours.
A sanctuary for guests and penguins
While only 800m offshore, Picnic Island has a feeling of complete privacy and calm. Which is probably why penguins feel at home too.
Fauna and Flora
Here, there is intimacy with nature. You will be sharing the island with resident Little Penguins and shearwaters, and visiting seals, dolphins and whales.
Weather and the Roaring 40’s
Tasmania sits in a global stream of winds between the latitudes of 40 and 50 degrees south, first described by sailors and meteorologists in the 19th century as ‘The Roaring 40s’. This means that the weather can be wild and bracing, while it can also be still and serene, sometimes on the same day.
Island History
The Oyster Bay people, known as the Paredarerme, used Picnic Island as a place of food gathering. In 1829, the island formed part of a land grant to Captain Robert Hepburn when he settled in the area, which he used as a breakwater to anchor his boat. How did Picnic Island get its name? We don’t know, but we can hazard a guess.
Our philosophy
Picnic Island is high impact for guests, low impact for the environment. The island operates off-grid with energy generated by the sun, and water from the skies above—some of the purest rainwater on Earth.
